Amid growing geopolitical uncertainty, climate risks and persistent inequality, renewable energy provides a practical foundation for building resilient and equitable economies. With costs continuing to decline, renewables present a timely opportunity to meet rising energy demand while strengthening energy security, supporting industrial development, and advancing inclusive growth.
At COP30, REN21, the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), and the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) will co-host this event to explore how an integrated renewable energy system can serve as the backbone of energy security. For developing countries, renewables offer a pathway that is less resource-dependent, more adaptable to external shocks, and aligned with economic and social goals.
Why this conversation matters
Global electricity demand is set to grow by around 4% between 2025 and 2027, with developing economies accounting for 85% of that growth. At the same time, 700 million people still lack access to electricity, and over 2 billion lack clean cooking solutions. Meeting this demand through fossil fuels would deepen global inequality and climate vulnerability.
Renewables provide a viable, scalable and affordable alternative, one that can drive economic transformation. Beyond delivering sustainable energy, renewables can deliver energy security, resilient development, and stable economic benefits.
About the event
This session will convene experts from across sectors to discuss how an integrated renewable energy system can anchor sustainable development and prosperity.
The event will feature insights from REN21, IISD, IEEFA and regional representatives from Latin America and South Asia.
Participants will examine how to:
- Position renewables as a strategic driver of energy security and sustainable development
- Share regional insights and lessons, including from India’s Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) model
- Identify investment strategies and enabling conditions for inclusive, demand-driven renewable energy transitions
- Strengthen collaboration between policymakers, researchers, and industry to scale renewables-based economies
