The Mini-grid Policy Toolkit – Now in Portuguese!

The Mini-grid Policy Toolkit is for policy makers to navigate the mini-grid policy design process. It contains information on mini-grid operator models, the economics of mini-grids, and necessary policy and regulation that must be considered for successful implementation.   The publication specifically focuses on Africa. Progress on extending the electricity grid in many countries has remained slow because of high costs of gird-extension and limited utility/state budgets for electrification. Mini-grids provide an affordable and cost-effective option to extend needed electricity services. Putting in place the right policy for min-grid deployment requires considerable effort but can yield significant improvement in electricity access rates as examples from Kenya, Senegal and Tanzania illustrate.   The toolkit is available in English, French and Portuguese.

WWEA and Yansa call for donations for Community Wind Farm as Earthquake Relief Project in Mexico

The 7th International Renewable Energy Conference, MEXIREC took place in between two earthquakes that devastated parts of Mexico.   Inspired by MEXIREC, Stefan Gsänger, Secretary General of the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA) and Sergio Oceransky, Director of Yansa, decided to launch an earthquake relief project to help rural indigenous communities affected by the earthquakes. Together with local organisations, Yansa and WWEA want to set up a small wind farm to fund community-led reconstruction in rural indigenous communities. The project will help to nurture the autonomy and leadership of these communities, reducing their dependency and vulnerability.   In order to make the project a reality, Yansa and WWEEA are calling for support from companies, in particular wind turbine manufacturers, that can donate parts or all of the equipment required for the project. Financial donations for construction and commissioning are also kindly welcomed (in-kind and cash donations may be tax-deductible). The project will serve as model for community participation in wind energy in developing / emerging countries. After the reconstruction process is over, profits will be devoted to community-led reforestation.  More information can be found here in the attached project description.   Potential donors are requested to get in contact with the initiators in order to get more detailed information:   Sergio Oceransky, Director of Yansa: Email:, Phone: +52 155 2005 8065 (Mexico), +1 917 382 8088 (international)   Stefan Gsänger, WWEA Secretary General: Email:, Phone: +49-228-369 40-80
