REN21 - Peter Rae

Peter Rae

Peter Rae is Chairman of the International Renewable Energy Alliance which is the world alliance of the major world renewable energy associations (bioenergy, hydro, wind, solar and geothermal). He is Senior Vice President of the World Wind Energy Association and is on the Board of several of the other Alliance partners.
 
He is also Vice Chairman of REN21 and a member of the International Jury of the Energy Globe Sustainability Awards.

From 1993 to 2004 he was Chairman of Hydro Tasmania which is Australia’s largest renewable energy generator and led the 100-year-old hydro corporation expansion into the wind industry and into world leadership in sustainable environmental management. Hydro Tasmania has been the co-author of the Guidelines for Sustainable Development.
 
From 1968 till 1986 he was a Senator and for 6 ½ years a Senior Shadow Minister. He was a State Government Minister for 3 ½ years. Whilst a Senator he was chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission which led to the formation of the Australian Securities and Investment Commission and was also chairman of the Senate Committee which led to the establishment of the legislation relating to the operation of government business enterprises.

He was leader of the Renewable Energy industry delegation to the 14th and 15th sessions of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development in New York when energy was the subject. He was the moderator for the Renewable Energy side event at the CSD.
 
He chaired sessions of the World Energy Conference which was held in Sydney in 2004 and was a key note speaker at the recent National Business Leaders Forum on Sustainable Development held in Canberra.
 
In 1999 Mr Rae was made an Officer in the Order of Australia for services to business and industry.   Mr Rae was the 2005 University of Tasmania “Alumni of the Year” in recognition of work in renewable energy.
